WRITING FOR FILM & TELEVISION PROGRAM
“Every great production starts with the writer. Writers who are interested in the craft of writing should start with Act One!”
– Ralph Winter, Act One Faculty, Executive Producer, Wolverine, X-Men, and Fantastic Four
Created for screen and television writers wishing to enter the entertainment industry, the Writing for Film & Television Program offers premium instruction and training in the craft. With an emphasis on artistry, professionalism, meaning, and Christian spirituality, students are supported throughout the writing process by working professionals as they achieve mastery.
There are three great programs to choose from to meet your needs:
WRITING SEMINAR (2 Weeks)
The Writing Seminar is an essential cornerstone to the Act One curriculum and offers a real focus on the power of story, an overview of the business of Hollywood, the realities of working and living in the industry, the art of visual storytelling, ethics and faith, reaching a global audience, and the spiritual journey of a Christian in the entertainment industry. It begins with a 5-day, all-inclusive retreat, before continuing on to the classroom for the second week – delivering over 100 hours of instruction from industry professionals. Classes are taught by top writers and industry professionals who share current insight on the business as well as best practices for creating quality content for mainstream entertainment.
While it is highly recommended to continue taking Act One courses, the Writing Seminar allows students outside of the Los Angeles area to partake in the Act One experience, and opens the door to other alumni opportunities. Alumni of the Writing Seminar are eligible to take additional Act One alumni courses and are granted entry into the Act One Alumni Association, which provides a wealth of resources and networking.
Dates:
June 21 – July 3, 2010 | Applications due: April 1, 2010
WRITING SEMINAR AND WRITING WORKSHOP (10 Weeks)
Following the Writing Seminar (above), the Writing Workshop is a series of classes offering nuts-and-bolts instruction and rigorous writing exercises designed to prepare students to write a full-length spec script. Students receive extensive feedback on their assignments from professional mentors. The course content includes: pitching your idea, writing the first 10 pages, formatting, style, writing a scene, and more. Classes meet on Saturdays, with weekly assignments due each week.
Dates:
June 21 – August 28, 2010 | Applications due: April 1, 2010
*Recommended!* WRITING CERTIFICATE (14 Months)
Following the Seminar and Workshop, students enrolled in the Certificate also benefit from an additional year (two six-month sessions) of intensive Mentoring by professional writers. Students may choose:
- Feature Track: The first six- month session is a mentored writer’s group designed to walk students through the completion of a feature-length script. The second six-month session is a one-on-one mentorship that can be tailored to a specific writing goal or to complete a second script.
- TV Track: Simulating a writer’s room experience, the TV Track offers instruction and support while completing a Comedy (half-hour) or Drama (hour) spec script in each of the two six-month sessions.
Mentorships meet every other week, allowing students to work full-time if necessary. Up to 20 hours of writing each week should be accounted for when planning to take the Certificate. In addition to the ongoing support and wealth of resources in the Act One community, Certificate graduates are eligible to apply for advanced and professional-level courses, such as Act Two and Act Three. See Alumni Programs for more details.
