Inspired by BJ Oropeza’s book of the same name, “The Gospel According to Superheroes” mini-conference is an opportunity to explore the spiritual and mythological roles that superheroes have played in popular culture. Panels will include “Up, Up, and Away! The Rise and Rise of the Superhero Film” and “Why the World Needs Superman: A 75th Anniversary Commemoration,” as well as a screening of Warner Bros. summer blockbuster Man of Steel.
Guests slated to appear include actress K Callan (Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman), filmmaker Robert Meyer Burnett (Star Trek: The Next Generation Blu-ray special features, Free Enterprise), American Cinematheque Head Programmer and voice over actor Grant Moninger (Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, DC Super Friends), and producer Derek Hoffman (Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut, the X-Men films).
Hosted by entertainment journalist Geoff Boucher (Los Angeles Times’ Hero Complex, Entertainment Weekly’s CapeTown) and sponsored by Azusa Pacific University, the Reel Spirituality Institute at Fuller Theological Seminary, and Act One: Hollywood Above the Line.
